Charity team that fits into the NHS

17 May 2016

ILC servicesA Sheffield GP has hailed a charity support team that, she says, “fits in to the NHS as though it actually belongs there.”

Dr Jenny Stephenson, from the Stannington and Walkley Medical Centres, says Age UK Sheffield’s team of Independent Living Co-ordinators (ILCs) is “a lovely resource which provides a professional package.”

The local charity’s ILC team provide the city’s over-50s with health, housing, financial, and wellbeing support, helping people to retain and regain their independence to lead a happy and fulfilled later life.

Dr Stephenson said: “Having somebody who can help with finance, carers, and social support is a vital resource, so that people can pick what they need to keep their independence. As a GP, I only know what I know. I don’t know all the things that can wrap around and support somebody, and I like to know I can plug in to somebody who does.

“I also like it because I have another pair of eyes seeing this person. The first person I referred to Age UK Sheffield, I thought he was confused but couldn’t be sure. They went in, did a memory test in a very professional manner, and confirmed what I thought. It was very, very helpful.”

Age UK Sheffield ILCs provide support in the home by referral and, in some cases, by self-referral by the older person or a family member. For more details on ILC services, call (0114) 250 2850.
