Sheffield charity to host swinging seaside showstopper for city older people

19 July 2017

Wellbeing Centre summer fayreA sun-soaked sixties showstopper promises to transport older people to the seaside of their youth, thanks to the city’s leading older persons charity.

Age UK Sheffield is holding the swinging summer celebration at its renowned Wellbeing Centre- a one-stop-shop for older people and their relatives which combines a range of support services in a safe, central hub.

People are being encouraged to drop into the free event, joining the facility’s current members and seasoned vocalist Susan St Nicholas.

Organisers hope the nostalgia fest will help older people, including those living with dementia, reconnect with their past- as well as acting as a fundraiser to support the centre’s vital work.

Natasha Wilson, wellbeing assistant coordinator at Age UK Sheffield, said: “Last year’s Summer Fayre was an overwhelming success, and everybody commented on what a good time they had. The event is a great opportunity for all of our members, their families and friends to come together and celebrate.

“It is also a chance for members of the public to spend an afternoon with us and really experience what a special environment there is at The Wellbeing Centre. Many people will either be directly affected by dementia or know somebody who is, and so events like this raise awareness of what support is available.

“This year’s theme is ‘60s By The Sea’, including optional 60s fancy dress, themed decorations and props, a pick ‘n’ mix with white chocolate fish and chips, live music, a photobooth and a raffle with some amazing prizes.

“Various items will be on sale, including raffle tickets, handmade jewellery, key rings and sun catchers made by members.”

The money raised from the event will go to the running of the Wellbeing Centre, helping to provide members with activities including therapy pony visits, seated flamenco sessions and cookery equipment.

The Summer Fayre will take place on Friday 4 August 2017 from 1pm. For more information,
