Earlier this month Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin launched a new dementia respite service at the new Choices Housing Association building at Withywood on Ellesmere Road, Shrewsbury.
The respite service is every Monday, 10.00am–4.00pm and gives carers the opportunity to have a full day to do what they would like to do, safe in the knowledge their loved one is being cared for by a trained, experienced caring team.
Neil Brookes, Dementia Support Officer of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said: 'The opening day went very well, the morning was spent leading a sing along with local guitarist Paul Wallace in the lounge overlooking the garden. After a two-course lunch we ran a reminiscence session. All the carers enjoyed a well-deserved break.'
Neil added, 'One lady went out for lunch with an old friend for the first time in two years. It was great to be able to offer this level of support to families living with dementia. We have a lot of interest in the dementia respite service and still have some places available, so please do get in touch.'
Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin also provide eight dementia drop in centres across Shropshire giving people living with dementia and their carers the opportunity to get to know new people, share experiences and take part in stimulating activities.
