We need your green fingers

Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is joining St George’s Junior School, Copthorne to create an intergenerational allotment.

The inspirational project aims to bring together older people within the community to share their passion for gardening and growing with the pupils of St George’s Junior School. It will offer opportunities for older people who may no longer have access to a garden or those who would welcome the companionship of joining a team of volunteers to inspire young people to grow their own vegetables.

Head teacher of St George’s Junior School in Shrewsbury, Sharon Munro said: ‘We are delighted to be working with Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin; this is a wonderful opportunity for our children to interact with older people. A key learning outcome will be to ensure the children see for themselves where some of their food comes from; whatever we grow will then be cooked in our kitchens.’

Mrs Munro is keen for this project to be the start of a long-term relationship between St George’s and Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin. She added: ‘I want this school to be known for supporting intergenerational schemes. The children can learn so much from our older generations and in turn, we hope that older people, who may be socially isolated, will benefit from the contact. It’s a lovely project to be involved in.’

Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin Director of Operations, Kevin Moore said: ‘We are looking for older people in the Copthorne and surrounding areas who would like to take part in this brilliant project. We know that older people have a variety of skills to offer, from growing food to recipe planning and cooking and to do this in a school setting is really exciting.’
