Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is delighted that BBC broadcaster and journalist Liz Kershaw will chair our one-day conference on 11 April.

The award winning BBC Radio 6 Music DJ, who is already very familiar with the charity as patron of Age UK Warwickshire, will certainly add plenty of spice to the event. She is mad about music, passionate about politics and in her words ‘just looking for the bigger picture in an ever smaller minded world.’

This year’s conference, Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll: The changing face of old age, is aiming to break with tradition and open up a dialogue on some often considered private subjects such as relationships, sexual health and wellbeing, drug use and addiction in later life.

Speakers include Dr David Lee and Professor Josie Tetley from Manchester Metropolitan University, authors of the popular Valentine’s Day report ‘How long will I love you? Sex and intimacy in later life’; Professor Tony Elliot, Clinical Director for older adult services in South Staffordshire & Shropshire, who will be discussing ‘Substance misuse among older adults: a neglected but treatable problem’; and Trelawney Kerrigan from Dating Options, an expert on dating safely.

Heather Osborne, Chief Executive of Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin said: ‘This year’s conference programme aims to modernise some of the perceptions of old age and show the new generation of retirees that they can live happy, active and fulfilled lives.’

‘It is very exciting that Liz Kershaw has agreed to be conference chair; we are determined to ditch some of the stereotypes on later life at the conference and I am confident that Liz will help us do just that.’

If you are interested in any of these topics or want to challenge some of your own perceptions of old age then this conference is definitely for you.

The conference takes place at University Centre Shrewsbury, Thursday 11 April 2019, 10.00am-4.00pm and we are expecting places to be in high demand. Tickets cost £50 (£25 for senior citizens/students).
