Volunteers who have collectively clocked up 200 years of service running a day centre providing a friendly day out for older people have been celebrating its 25th birthday.
The Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin day centre in Alveley, near Bridgnorth, held a party for its 12 members and 16 volunteers last month to celebrate the big anniversary.
Every Monday the centre offers older people a chance to get out of their house and socialise with others. The centre provides their transport, a hot meal and plenty of activities such as singing, bingo, quizzes and talks.
Anthea Whetton started Alveley day centre with her husband in 1992 and has just completed 25 years’ service as a volunteer there.
Lois Clifford, Day Centre Support Officer for Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin, said, ‘Congratulations to the team at Alveley for reaching these amazing milestones. We really couldn’t run our day centres without the hard work and skill of our volunteers.
‘Pat Bannister, the organiser, has been volunteering for us for 15 years and has announced she has decided to retire, so we will need someone to fill her shoes when she leaves in September. We would like to thank Pat so much for all her time and effort, she has made a wonderful contribution.’
Pat said, ‘I get a great deal of pleasure in seeing how the members enjoy being with friends of their own age. They can chat about any issues they have and they don’t feel on their own.’
