Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin are moving their Shifnal Diamond Drop In Centre to an exciting new venue and working with local stakeholders to provide an excellent local dementia support service.
The support group will be moving to the Fire Station Exhibition Centre, which is packed with local photographs and memorabilia and provides a very friendly and welcoming environment. The former fire station was refurbished in 2009 and Shifnal Local History Group have amassed a permanent display of Shifnal’s cultural heritage, which makes an excellent starting point for reminiscing within the group.
The group will provide:
- A chance to get to know others and share experiences in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
- A welcoming and friendly environment for us to provide support and information about our own and other services that are available to help and support you.
- An opportunity for everyone to take part in interesting activities and have some fun. We are planning a wide range of activities including singing, music, table games, art and reminiscence that will appeal to everyone.
The group, which is for both the carer and the person living with dementia, will be held monthly. The first session will take place on Tuesday 24 October from 2.00-4.00pm.
The feedback at our other centres has been very positive: one member said, ‘The drop in centre has been a real boon to me personally, as it helps me to cope as a carer and my husband gets such a lot out of it too and it makes him smile and we can do fun things together.’
If you know a family member, neighbour or friend who might benefit from this service, please encourage them to contact us and give it a try. We particularly want to help people who are caring for their loved ones, but who may be feeling isolated and in need of a little help and support. We can even arrange for transport and a buddy to look after them, until they feel comfortable to come by themselves.
If you would like to find out more about the Drop In Centre or would like to book a place, please call Jenny Smith or Neil Brookes on 01743 233 123.
