International Older Persons Day

International Older Person's Day is celebrated on 1st October but we hope you can join with us throughout the whole month of October to value the contribution older people make.

With your help we'd like to reach the point where everyone in Somerset and North Somerset has opportunities to age well and enjoy later life.

The United Nations created International Older Persons' Day over 30 years ago to celebrate older people.  Their website states:

"A longer life brings with it opportunities, not only for older people and their families, but also for societies as a whole. Additional years provide the chance to pursue new activities such as further education, a new career or pursuing a long neglected passion. Older people also contribute in many ways to their families and communities. Yet the extent of these opportunities and contributions depends heavily on one factor: health.  There is, however, little evidence to suggest that older people today are experiencing their later years in better health than their parents.

If people can experience these extra years of life in good health and if they live in a supportive environment, their ability to do the things they value will be little different from that of a younger person. If these added years are dominated by declines in physical and mental capacity, the implications for older people and for society are more negative."

Age UK Somerset offers a range of services for local older people.  Our focus is on improving health, helping with financial struggles and providing services to reduce loneliness

Give your valuable opinions via SOOM

We have set up Somerset Older Opinions Matter (SOOM), to help us learn what the issues of greatest importance are for local older people and what needs to be done or offered to make later life better. Every month we will publish a short anonymous survey to garner the opinions of over 60s in our area. The responses might not only shape our services but we hope to empower local older people by using their collective responses to speak up on their behalf to other local organisations and service providers to make later life better across Somerset and North Somerset. The more people we can get to part, the more powerful the collective voice will be!
