Age UK Somerset is always looking for Volunteers to act as Befrienders for older people who are suffering from loneliness and isolation.
Can you help?
We all know what it's like to feel lonely, but did you know that around 1 million older people regularly go an entire month without speaking to anyone?
The problem of loneliness in later life
Loneliness is a massive issue for people in later life in the UK. Half of all people aged 75 and over live alone, and 1 in 10 people aged 65 or over say they are always or often feel lonely. Shockingly, half of all older people consider the television their main form of company.
We need your help
At Age UK Somerset one of the ways we try to beat loneliness in later life is through our Befriending service which provides a valuable social link for older people who may be lonely or isolated, particularly in rural areas. When friends and family live too far away to make regular contact, our Volunteers provide a friendly face.
Watch Jean's Story to see the difference our Befriending Volunteers make.
As a Befriending Volunteer you would be matched with an older person and then visit them in their own home, for an hour a week, to chat, sometimes to reminisce.
The problem is that there are more older people who would like a visitor than there are Volunteers to visit, and in some areas we have a waiting list. This is why WE NEED YOUR HELP.
Our volunteers are greatly appreciated by us, but more importantly the more people like you who become Volunteers, the closer we can get to reaching our aim of making later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience for all Older People across Somerset.
Our Befriender role is the most popular form of Volunteering for Age UK Somerset because it requires no training or experience, is flexible and satisfying. A lot of our Volunteers get as much out of the visits as our clients do!
We will never ask more of you than you can give, and Volunteering can fit around the rest of your life.
If you'd like to apply
We have a quick and simple application process. The next step would be to:
- Please visit our main Volunteering page where our information and application pack are available to download.
Requesting information will not commit you to becoming a Volunteer, so if you are not sure whether you are interested and just want more information, please do ask.
Because the safety of our clients comes first, we always apply for references, and the Befriending role requires a DBS Certificate (formerly CRB) which we will sort out for you.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
Thank you for your interest in our work.
We very much hope you will decide to join us as an Age UK Somerset Volunteer with and find challenges, new skills and a sense of achievement. We are really keen to recruit new Volunteers!
