Age UK Staffordshire's Care Navigation team have recently supported a 90 year old ex-serviceman to celebrate his 90th birthday, by fulfilling is dream of a flight in a light aircraft.

Peter had been referred to the Virgin Care weight management service. The team then referred Peter to the Age UK Care Navigation Service based at Anglesey House, in Burton upon Trent, and also asked if they could arrange something special for the client’s 90th birthday.

Chris Byatt, Care Navigator at Age UK Staffordshire, called Anne McKinnon at SSAFA (the Armed Forces charity, formerly known as Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association).

He successfully managed to organise a flight in a four seater plane at a nearby airfield for 90-year-old Peter.

“It was jolly good,” said Peter, “and brought back some fantastic memories. The only thing I haven’t done now is ride in a helicopter – I fancy a go in one of those next!”

90-year-old Peter fulfilled his dream of flying in a light aircraft and hopes to also take a flight in a helicopter.

The flight was an excellent example of joint-working between the organisations and demonstrated the holistic care provided by all the services involved.

As well as helping to organise the flight, the Age UK Care Navigation Service assisted with an application for Attendance Allowance which Peter was successfully awarded. He was also referred into the British Legion.
