Boccia is a non-contact sport, which relies on the skill and subtlety of the player, rather than their size, speed and strength.

We've teamed up with Stoke on Trent ‘Get Out Get Active’ and the English Federation of Disability Sport to bring Boccia to a range of local settings.

What is Boccia?

Boccia (prounounced "bot-cha") is a fun, precision ball game, similar to boules. It's a target sport, similar to boules and Pétanque, played indoors with soft leather balls.

How is it played?

Boccia can be played by individuals, pairs, or teams. The aim of the game is to throw the balls as close as possible to a white target ball, or jack.

Who can play Boccia?

Our Boccia clubs are for anyone aged 50 and over in the Stoke-on-Trent area. Games are mixed gender and can be played by all abilities. All players play sitting, and various aids and equipment can be used to assist with throwing the balls.

Where is the game played?

We have adapted the game so it can be easily played in a range of different community and residential environments. Our Boccia clubs are hosted variety of local settings such as care homes, retirement villages, assisted living centres, community centres and Church halls.

Can I start my own Boccia club?

Yes - we're looking for more venues, volunteers and players to help us establish Boccia Boost activities across the Stoke on Trent area so get in touch if you can help. We will provide training, support and equipment to organisations and individuals who would like to start a club.

See what people are saying about Boccia

"A few weeks ago we had a half term activity day for the children. Our centre welcomes everyone to all our sessions and this was a really intergenerational day.

It was great to see the older people showing the children how to play. We had 6 year olds sitting in a row with 75 year olds and everyone integrating and enjoying the game."

How can I get involved?

  • Host a club - If you're a community group or local organisation with access to a suitable room we can help to organise a taster event at your venue. We'll bring along the equipment and plan a programme of activities.

  • Individual players - If you'd like to try Boccia for yourself, we can tell you about local taster sessions and groups near you. No previous experience is necessary as the rules are simple to pick up. Our friendly team will talk you through the game. We can cater for individuals with accessibility needs and mobility impairments. If you're nervous about coming alone why not bring a friend!

  • Volunteer - We're looking for volunteers to help facilitate our Boccia sessions across the Stoke City area. All volunteers will be given ongoing support and offered the opportunity to complete Boccia Leader training.
