Published on 07 August 2018 11:40 AM

1. Purse and bag theft

There were 9 recorded incidents of purse and bag thefts in July. Criminal opportunists frequently take advantage of an easy target where a purse or bag is left unattended on a shopping trolley in the supermarket, when out shopping or on public transport. Please take care of your personal possessions when you are out and about.

Tips to stay safe

  • Ensure that you do not keep your PIN number written down and kept in the same place as your bank cards.
  • Save your Bank’s telephone number on your mobile phone so that you can contact the Bank immediately to cancel your cards if they are lost or stolen.
  • Do not carry large amounts of cash.

2. Distraction Burglary

There were 17 recorded incidents of burglary/distraction burglary in July; 3 of these occurred as a result of an unlocked back door and/or open window. Please note that the hot weather continues to provide criminals with the opportunity to take advantage of unattended open doors and windows.

Tips to stay safe

  • Ensure that ground floor windows and back/front doors are kept closed and locked when a room or area in your home is unattended.
  • For information on increasing the security of your home (window locks and restrictors) contact the Wandsworth Council Community Safety team on 020 8871 6567 / email communitysafety@wandsworth.gov.uk.
