We love dogs here at Age UK Wandsworth and we know many of you do too. So we would like to invite you and your four-legged friend to join us in the very first Age UK Wandsworth Waggy Walk!
With restrictions easing and the weather warming, now is the perfect time to set yourself an activity challenge with your furry friend and raise much needed funds for Age UK Wandsworth. And of course, you don’t need your own dog, you could walk with someone who has one or even borrow someone else’s!
What is the Waggy Walk?
The Waggy Walk is a virtual event running for the month of April and you can choose a challenge that works for you.
- You might want to challenge yourself to reach a target distance or step count in the month
- Perhaps you could challenge your family to a whole loop of Richmond park every weekend
- Or do a walk in every park in the borough (we are lucky to have so many)
- If you and your dog are super fit you could make this a running challenge
- Or perhaps you could walk as many times as it takes to listen to the entire works of Shakespeare!
The choice is yours, the main thing is that we get outside, get active and do some pawsome fundraising! There is even a prize for every participant that raises over £100. We’d love to see photos of your waggy walks and see your dogs sporting their Age UK Wandsworth bandanas.
How to register
Just email email@example.com to register and get your fabulous Age UK Wandsworth dog bandana, as modelled here by our office dogs, Vimy (above) and Hector.
You can create your fundraiser by simply clicking on this Facebook link. Here is some suggested text for your Facebook page:
"Me and (insert dog's name) are raising vital funds for Age UK Wandsworth by taking part in their 'Waggy Walk'. We will be (insert challenge) throughout the month of April. Age UK Wandsworth is a local, independent charity (not funded by Age UK) and having seen more demand for their services during the pandemic, they desparately need more funding so i am doing my bit to help. Please support us by donating! Thank you!"
You can set your fundraising target as low or high as you wish, but if you reach £100 you will get a special prize of a brand new 2020 Wimbledon towel.
If you don’t have Facebook we can make you a fundraising page on Virgin Money Giving. Either way we can support you to get set up and get waggy walking!
Why are we fundraising?
The last year has been tough for all, but it has been especially difficult for older residents. Our mission has been to provide support to those isolated (and isolating) throughout the pandemic and beyond.
We have delivered over 3500 food parcels to vulnerable older people, surprised 1800 older residents with Christmas hampers and started new services to respond to the changing needs and increased the capacity of our existing services to meet the surge in demand.
However, the funding climate has changed drastically. With more charities needing even more funding, the competition for grants is immense and this is having an impact on our income. We are of course working furiously on every available funding avenue but we also need to look to our supporters. Every penny we raise can help protect our services and allow us to support every older person in Wandsworth who needs us.
