Talk Money Week 2021

Published on 09 November 2021 11:43 AM

Age UK Worcester & Malvern Hills know that money matters. So did you know that you could be eligible for some extra benefits? We can help you check your eligibility and help you get what your entitled to.

Why Talk Money?

People in the UK don’t talk about their money enough. Despite the COVID-19 crisis affecting our finances, 9 in 10 UK adults – that’s 47 million of us – don’t find it any easier to talk about money, or don’t even discuss it at all.

Held from 8 to 12 November, Talk Money Week aims to reduce the stigma around money by encouraging conversations among families, friends, neighbours, customers, colleagues and communities. Talking openly about money can have a huge impact on tackling money worries, and is important for our overall health and relationships. The impact of Covid-19 has made it more important than ever to start conversations about money to look after our financial wellbeing.

Everyone has money worries – and for many, the challenges of the pandemic have brought these to the fore – but just as you can take action to improve your physical health, you can also take some simple steps to feel more in control of your financial wellbeing too.

What do we do?

We have an expert team of Information & Advice advisors, who are on hand to help you with a plethora of things. This includes our popular FREE benefit check service for all over 50s in the Worcester & Malvern Hills area. With a few bits of information about you, your health and your finanical circumstances, we will be able to check and advise you if you could go on to claim a benefit.

No matter the result of the benefit check we will advise you on the best steps forward, as well as support you throughout the entire application process (should you decide to apply for an eligble benefit).

On top of this we can also provide you with FREE Legal Advice. Our Legal Advice expert will also be able to help you with writing a Will and both types of Lasting Power of Attorney (both of which are subject to charges).

What benefits could you be entitled to?

Attendance allowance

Attendance Allowance is a benefit for older people who may need extra help to stay independent at home, due to an illness or disability.

Carers allowance

Carer's Allowance is the main welfare benefit to help carers. You don't have to be related to or live with the person you care for to claim Carer's Allowance. It's extra money each week for you to use as you want or need to.

Council tax support

If your family, or someone who lives with you, is on a low income you may be able to receive help to pay your rent, or council tax. You do not have to be in receipt of another State Benefit to apply for these awards.

Disability living allowance

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is a benefit that helps with the extra costs you may face if you're disabled. However, it's gradually being replaced by Personal Independence Payment.

Housing benefit

Housing Benefit helps pay your rent if you are a tenant on a low income. It will not only reduce your rent but also cover some service charges like lifts and communal laundry facilities.

Pension credit

Pension Credit is an income-related benefit to give you some extra money in retirement. It comes in two parts and you may be eligible for one or both parts.

Guarantee Credit tops up your weekly income to a guaranteed minimum level. Savings Credit is extra money if you've got some savings or your income is higher than the basic State Pension.

Personal Independent Payment (PIP)

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit for people aged between 16 and 64 who because of a long-term illness or disability may need help with daily activities or getting around.

Winter fuel payment

Winter Fuel Payment or Winter Fuel Allowance is an annual payment to help with heating costs, made to households with someone over Pension Credit age.
