Commenting on plans announced by North Wales Police to force police officers to retire once they’ve completed 30 years of service, Robert Taylor, Chief Executive of Age Cymru, said:
“Forcing police officers to retire in order to cut costs flies right in the face of equality legislation and runs contrary to the UK Government’s plan to abolish forced retirement.
“If efficiency is the guiding principle of these cuts, length of service and consequently age should not be part of the equation.
“The huge pressure to slash budgets is no justification for bypassing basic equality principles which should withstand even the toughest economic and political environment.”
