Older people's winter worries

Rising energy costs and keeping warm in their own homes will be big concerns for over 65s in Wales this winter.

That's according to figures we're releasing today which show:

• 45% of over 65s in Wales (270,000) say they are worried about the increasing cost of energy bills this winter;

• 26% of over 65s in Wales (156,000) say they are worried about staying warm in their own homes this winter;

Our Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Graeme Francis says:

"Today's figures are a timely reminder that rising energy costs are an ongoing concern for almost half of all over 65s in Wales.

"They also show that as well as being a major strain on older people's finances, energy prices are also a source of stress and worry.

"In recent winters, the influence of factors such as rising energy prices has led to many over 65s spending less on food, heating and electricity as they struggle with household bills.

"This is why we need action to make sure older people in Wales are living in homes that are energy efficient and help them to keep warm at an affordable cost.

"Older people on low incomes also need access to income maximisation programmes and help to claim all the money they are entitled to receive.

"One in three older people who are entitled to Pension Credit - which can also lead to eligibility for Cold Weather Payments and other financial support, do not receive it.

"If older people received all the money they are entitled to it would make a major contribution to eradicating pensioner poverty in Wales."
