Target: Wellbeing
Target: Wellbeing Older People’s Programme is one of Target: Wellbeing’s two pan-regional programmes and focuses on older people in receipt of significant care. It is delivered through four projects:
The four projects are: the ‘Enriched Opportunities’ project, led by Age UKs and Age Concerns across Cumbria; the ‘Reading Groups for Older People’ project, provided by Cumbria Library Services; the ‘Care School’ project, led by Care Sector Alliance Cumbria and the ‘Gold Standard’ project, led by Age UK West Cumbria.
Gold standard
Gold standard brings together findings from all the Target: Wellbeing projects to develop tools and resources for all service providers and commissioners in the area. This includes best practice guides utilising work and experiences from Target: Wellbeing projects as well as knowledge gained through partnership working. Gold standard also involves events and networking opportunities to distribute the findings.

Care school
Care school works with Care Managers and staff to support a person-centred care approach. This is achieved through training staff to have increased understanding of nutrition, health and wellbeing. This enables service users to enjoy increased activities, better nutrition and benefit from higher standards of service provision with respect to wellbeing.
Reading groups for older people
The reading group project delivers sessions in residential care homes which combine reading and discussion. Extracts and poems are selected round themes to stimulate conversation and interaction. The groups allow participants to get to know each other, and have their thoughts and opinions listened to and valued. This improves self-esteem and communication skills, and increases mental wellbeing.
Enriched opportunities

The enriched opportunities project aims to develop a sustainable model of intervention that provides activities for older people in residential care and other care settings, aimed at improving nutritional, physical and mental wellbeing. The project is carried out in partnership with care staff and involvement from members of the community who continue to carry out the project once the Project Workers withdraw.
Target: Wellbeing is a programme of over 90 projects that increase exercise, encourage healthier eating and promote mental wellbeing. Funded by £8.9m from the National Lottery through the Big Lottery Fund, it’s managed by Groundwork for the benefit of disadvantaged communities across the Northwest.
