Solicitors for Older People Scotland

We work in partnership with Solicitors for Older People Scotland (SOPS), a group of Scottish law firms dedicated to providing legal services to older people.

Taking the stress out of seeing a lawyer

SOPS aim to remove the stress of seeing a lawyer.  All members are regulated by the Law Society of Scotland and have signed up to a Code of Practice to help ensure older people can feel comfortable dealing with lawyers.

Affordable legal fees

SOPS assess all clients for Legal Aid and will offer this from the very first visit where applicable.  Legal Aid for documents such as Wills and Powers of Attorney is available to quite large numbers of older people and assessment takes only minutes.

Accessible legal support, including home visits

SOPS have member firms across Scotland – you can see the full list of firms here.  If there is not a SOPS member firm in your area, they offer a free Home Visit service covering most parts of Scotland , to ensure that everyone who needs an appointment from SOPS can access one.

SOPS main areas of work:

  • Wills
  • Powers of Attorney
  • Advance Directives (often know as living wills)
  • Creating Discretionary Trusts and other trusts
  • Trust administration
  • Executries - dealing with someone’s affairs after their death
  • Estate and tax planning for families
  • Preserving assets and care costs mitigation
  • Guardianship and Interventions Orders
  • Mental health
  • Deprivation of Liberty
