Ways to donate your items to an Age UK shop
Take your donation to your local Age UK shop during working hours. Please do not leave items outside the shop if it's shut.
Look out for an Age UK donation bag posted through your door. Fill it and leave it outside your home on the specified collection day.
If you have several bags of items and can’t drop them off yourself, call 0800 169 8787 or contact your local Age UK shop to arrange a collection. The more items you have, the more economical a pick-up will be for us, so why not ask your friends, family or neighbours if they have any items to donate too?
Mobile phone donations
All Age UK shops have donation bins where you can drop off your old mobile phones.
What you can donate
We accept a wide variety of items, including clothes, mobile phones, computers, homeware, soft furnishings, CDs, DVDs, books, toys and games.
Some items can only be accepted by some of our Age UK shops. For example:
There are a few things that we cannot accept as donations:
- Broken, incomplete or unsafe items (such as toys, glassware, ornaments, and china)
- Safety equipment (including helmets, children car seats, and safety gates)
- Medical equipment
- Video tapes and cassettes
- Real fur
- Coat hangers
- Quilts, duvets, large bulky curtains, cushions and pillows
If you're unsure whether your items will be accepted by your local Age UK shop, then we recommend you call the shop before donating.
If you require further information, please call us on 0800 169 8787.
Recycle your unwanted IT equipment and donate the proceeds to Age UK
You can dispose of your IT equipment safely and easily, while helping us fund our vital work.
How to donate
Donating your unwanted IT can be done through the RDC (IT disposal and recycling) website in 3 simple steps:
- Create your order - select the items that you wish to donate from the online list. All you need to know is your IT equipment make and model and working condition. You'll receive an instant valuation of how much your equipment is worth.
- Send your items for free - package your items and then drop them off at your nearest Collect+ store, where they will then be sent to the nearest authorised recycling facility.
>> Find your closest Collect+ store.
- Complete donation - Once completed the money will be sent directly to Age UK on your behalf. Don’t forget to gift aid your donation, so we can claim a further 25% of the donation amount from the government at no extra cost to you.
>> Start donating your IT equipment now
What IT equipment can I recycle?
You can recycle desktop PC’s, laptops, computer monitors and tablets. You can choose from hundreds of makes and models, which can be easily found on the RDC website.
What happens to my IT equipment?
RDC will test your equipment: if it's working successfully then it will be reused or resold; for failed or obsolete items, parts will be re-used and materials will be recycled, with nothing going to landfill.
All data will be wiped to government approved standards. Data destruction is performed without accessing the data contained on your computer.
How can my donation help Age UK?
By donating your old computers to RDC, Age UK will receive the full amount shown on your evaluation. Money raised will go towards our vital work both nationally and locally.
We believe that we can help everyone make the most of later life. We do this by inspiring, supporting and enabling in a number of ways.

We have a small amount of Age UK shops across the country that will accept donations of good quality furniture and may be able to arrange house clearances on request. We have furniture shops in the following areas:
- Blackpool, Lancashire
- Boston, Lincolnshire
- Bridgnorth, Shropshire
- Leigh, Lancashire
- Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire
- Newport, Isle of Wight
- Orpington, Kent
- Polegate, East Sussex
- Shanklin, Isle of Wight
- Wigan, Lancashire
What do we do with your items?
90% of the items donated to us can be sold, and the rest we can recycle
We try our very best to sell every donated item in our shops, and items that are slow to sell are transferred to other shops to be placed on sale again.
In the rare occasion that an item doesn’t sell, we pass it to our dedicated rag merchant who runs a recycling scheme.
Some items are sent to Eastern Europe and Africa to be used by people in need, and damaged clothes are given to heavy industry for cleaning wipes. Nothing is wasted if you donate it to Age UK.
Where the money goes
The average bag of donations is worth £10 to Age UK. This could buy two pendant alarms connected to a telephone response team, ensuring immediate help for a vulnerable older person in an emergency.
5 bags of donations could provide hot meals and companionship for 16 people at a day centre.
Sign up for Gift Aid when you bring in your goods and increase the value of your donation by approximately 25%.
If you are a UK tax payer, just complete a simple declaration when you make a donation and we can claim 25p back in tax at no cost to you - your tax code won’t be affected either - so for every £10 we make from your donations, we get £12.50.
Once your donation has been sold, you will receive a notification by post or by email (which saves the charity money) for you to confirm you want the money raised donated under the Gift Aid scheme. You only need to reply if you don’t want to donate the proceeds of the sale.
