Age needs one voice. Now it has:
Age UK is the new force combining Age Concern England and
Help the Aged in England.
In the world’s poorest countries, older people are among the most vulnerable and the most neglected. You can help them – and see the difference your support makes.
There is only one sponsorship scheme that supports older people. Age UK works in partnership with our sister organisation, HelpAge International, to deliver it.
In developing countries, older people suffer more than most. Poverty, illness and isolation increase with age. Most have to work until the day they die. And aid agencies often overlook their needs.
See the transformation as your support helps them out of desperate circumstances and brings about lasting, positive change. Sponsor a grandparent today.
Violence. Kidnappings. Drug barons. Lawlessness. After more than 50 years of internal armed conflict, Colombia is a dangerous place.
With the world’s second largest displaced population and 64 per cent of the population living below the poverty line, Colombia is the ‘forgotten emergency’.
Life is particularly difficult for its older people, many of who have spent much of their lives caught in the crossfire. They have lost their homes and livelihoods, seen friends and family murdered and struggle to survive far from their native communities.
More than 80% of Ethiopians farm for a living. Crops depend on rainfall and drought in Ethiopia is frequent. Food is scarce and older people suffer the most – often giving their share to the children.
Diseases like malaria, typhoid, hepatitis and meningitis are rife and often fatal – particularly for vulnerable older people.
Hundreds of thousands of children orphaned by AIDS are in the care of grandparents – putting unbearable strain on already stretched resources. Exhausted and impoverished, grandparents resort to desperate measures.
Sponsor a Grandparent is a collaborative programme funded by Age UK and implemented by HelpAge International (both registered charities)
