Arthritis Care is a UK-wide voluntary organisation offering help and support to people with all types of arthritis. They have a comprehensive website, a wide range of publications and a telephone helpline, as well as over 250 local support groups. Their publication ‘Living with Osteoarthritis’ is particularly useful. They also run self-management courses to help people gain skills and confidence to manage their arthritis and improve their quality of life.
How you are affected by arthritis depends on many factors - in particular, which joints are involved. If you find walking or tasks like getting dressed or preparing food difficult, contact your local authority social services department and explain the difficulties you are having. They can arrange to assess what help you may be eligible to receive and recommend equipment and gadgets that can make tasks easier. You may have to pay towards the cost of any services they arrange.
If you have difficulties with personal care and day-to-day tasks or need watching over to make sure you are all right, you may be eligible to claim a non means-tested benefit – Disability Living Allowance if you are under 65 or Attendance Allowance if you are 65 and over. You can find out more about these and other benefits you may be entitled by calling Age UK on 0800 169 6565.
