NHS-funded nursing care

NHS-funded nursing care is paid directly to a nursing home. It covers the care provided to residents by registered nurses employed by the home.

Eligibility for NHS-funded nursing care

You are eligible for NHS-funded nursing care if:

  • you don’t qualify for NHS continuing healthcare care, and
  • you’ve been assessed as needing help from a registered nurse in a nursing home.

You shouldn’t be considered for NHS-funded nursing care until a decision has been made that you don’t qualify for NHS continuing healthcare. Because of this, most people will not need a separate assessment for NHS-funded nursing care.

If you are eligible for NHS-funded nursing care, payment will be made directly to your nursing home. This payment should be reflected in the care home fee actually charged to you.

Your needs will be reviewed no more than 3 months after the initial decision, and then at least once every year.
