Remaining in our own home for as long as possible is often one of the things that matters most to us as we grow older. However, dealing with the responsibilities associated with home ownership can become more daunting, especially if we have no one to help us.
The Gifted Housing Service was set up over 35 years ago by Help the Aged to address this issue and Age UK is committed to continuing this unique service throughout England and Wales.

Donors to the Gifted Housing Service donate their property to the Charity and, through a legal agreement, receive the following benefits:
People join the Gifted Housing Service for many different reasons, but a number find themselves on their own in later life and have concerns about managing the responsibilities of home ownership.
The service is flexible and tailored to the individual needs of our donors.
Please remember that the gift of property to a charity involves the disposal of a major asset. This should not be undertaken without professional advice on the advantages and disadvantages of such a decision, which could have favourable or adverse implications on personal circumstances in the future.

A. Yes. Our aim is to help older people to maintain their independence at home for as long as possible.
Later, if you need to move, Age UK will involve you in the process of finding a suitable alternative home.
A. No. Equity Release schemes provide capital secured against your property with interest accumulating on top of the loan. A sudden increase in capital may affect entitlement to certain means-tested benefits.
In contrast, the Gifted Housing Service offers a supportive service for life. Donors do not receive capital for their gift, but because Age UK covers so many costs, donors find their income can go further.
Donors also appreciate the ongoing support which the service provides and freedom from many of the worries associated with home ownership.
A. No. Age UK recommends that prospective donors first discuss their intentions with family, close friends and professional advisors.
The Charity employs independent solicitors chosen by each donor to handle the legal aspects of the donation, including a formal Donation Agreement. All such legal costs are met by Age UK.
A. If the time came when you felt residential care would be your best option, your Care Coordinator would help you choose a care home to your liking and assist with making the move.
Our support to you would continue with visits and contributions towards the care fees.
A. Our aim is to enable donors to make decisions and choices about all aspects of their lives.
We are here to consult and work with donors to achieve good outcomes. We do also have to fulfil our responsibilities for ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
