Winter Fuel Payment

Winter Fuel Payment or Winter Fuel Allowance is an annual payment to help with heating costs, made to households with someone over Pension Credit age.

Not heating our homes properly puts us at risk of cold-related illnesses such as a heart attack or even hypothermia. So make sure you're getting your Winter Fuel Payment.

Who can claim Winter Fuel Payment?

Most people born on or before 5 May 1953 will qualify for the payment in 2016/17 (the date changes every year).

2016/17 payments

Situation Born on or before 5 May 1953 Aged 80 or over in the qualifying week
You qualify and live alone (or none of the people you live with qualify) £200 £300
You qualify and get one of the benefits listed* £200 £300
You live with someone under 80 who also qualifies £100 £200
You live with someone 80 or over who also qualifies £100 £150

As you can see, If you live with other people who also qualify you'll get less, depending on their age.

How to claim Winter Fuel Payment

To ask about your payment or to make a claim, call the Winter Fuel Payment Helpline on 0345 915 1515.

You only need to claim once. After this, you should get it automatically each year, as long as your circumstances do not change.

The payment is made directly into your bank account in November or December.
