What is a living will?

A living will is where you express your wishes about how you want to be treated and cared for in certain situations, in case there comes a time when you lack capacity to make or communicate your decisions .

The term ‘living will’ doesn’t have a legal meaning but usually refers to either an advance decision or an advance statement. The difference between an advance decision and advance statement is explained in this guide.
