Our Step Up Falls Prevention Programme aims to help those aged 50+ maintain their strength and balance.

BFF

Falls are the main cause of older people attending accident and emergency departments; for the most part, they don’t cause serious injury but can be really distressing and impact older people’s confidence in their ability to get around.

Age UK Tameside, with the support of Public Health, delivers a free 8-week Step Up Falls Prevention Programme, delivered by qualified staff.  People referred to the service will receive a home safety assessment and personal assessment to determine their mobility strengths and needs. All participants will need GP approval to take part in the course which staff will arrange.

The programme is aimed at people aged 65 and over who:

  • Have experienced a fall
  • Have a fear of falling
  • Wish to improve their mobility levels.

The chair-based exercises are designed to improve stability during standing, walking and other activities. You will learn specific exercises to improve balance, increase functional flexibility and strengthen muscles around the hips, knees and ankles. Each session will have lots of useful information about personal and home safety.

The Step Up Falls Prevention Programme is a tailor-made programme. All the participants are assessed so that the course meets their individual needs and abilities so everyone can get the most out of it.

We have lots of great feedback from the course. We know you’ll not only come away feeling more confident on your feet but the sessions are also fun and you’ll get to meet new people.
