Digital Champion

The winner of our Digital Champion of the Year 2015 competition is John Davies, 59, from Great Yarmouth!

The Digital Champion of the Year competition is our search for an individual with an inspiring digital journey. This year's competition promoted over 80 applications which we put forward to a panel of judges who represented industry leading digital organisations, like Google, EE, Go ON UK and The Daily Telegraph.

We invited our five finalists to a glittering awards ceremony in London on Friday 20 March 2015, where we revealed John Davies as our Digital Champion. You can read John's inspiring story below and view photos from the day.

John was nominated by his Line Manager who is the Volunteer Coordinator at the Great Yarmouth Community Trust: 'John first attended our internet café having never even touched a keyboard before, and explained that he knew he had to use one of these (computers) now, but I want to learn as much as I can.

'He rapidly improved his skills and now competently uses the internet for web searching, social media and form filling. John does not have a computer of his own; his unemployment has been a barrier to this, however using the internet he is able to use the Universal Job match service as well as saving his work or printing it out and taking it home to look over.

'John’s biggest challenge was the difference in processes in terms of job searching. Phoning up an employer and meeting them for a chat has now been replaced by a CV and cover letter that needs to be sent by email. John was taught how to format his CV and letters properly using the terminology that employers look for during lots of one-to-one training sessions.

'After recognising how well John embraced these new skills and how keen he was to learn, the Community Trust offered him a voluntary position to help others who were in the same position John was previously. John has gone from beginner to digital champion in just over one year; it’s amazing he has literally helped hundreds of people.'
