The Big Help Out: Can you lend us a hand?

Published on 24 April 2023 08:20 AM

Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire are delighted to announce that we will be taking part in this year's The Big Help Out - which kicks off officially on Monday 8th May.

The event will mark His Majesty The King’s Coronation and involves thousands of organisations across the country coming together to give us all the chance to help out in our local communities.

One of the primary objectives of the Big Help Out is to raise awareness of volunteering throughout the UK and provide opportunities for people to experience volunteering and make a difference in their communities.

With all of this in mind, we are fully embracing the spirit of this fantastic initiative and providing a host of volunteering opportunities for anyone who is kind enough to lend a hand in helping us to make Herefordshire and Worcestershire a great place to grow older.

Some of our volunteer opportunities will include supporting:

Dementia Cafes – An enjoyable activities group in a supportive environment, the cafes offer a wide range of fun activities such as history talks, music and singing, arts and crafts, as well as games and quizzes that everyone can join in with. Volunteering would mean helping to support members with lots of chats, making sure there is plenty of tea and coffee being fully supported by our friendly staff and brilliant volunteers.

Computer Cafes – The Computer Cafes are a great place to learn all about technology such as emailing, surfing the web and accessing online services like grocery shopping and online banking, whilst also meeting new people and making new friends.  Becoming a volunteer would mean taking on an engaged role in the sessions being fully supported by our friendly staff and brilliant volunteers.

Pershore Allotment – Keep fit and active in the “green gym” with great opportunities to grow delicious vegetables whilst meeting new people. Becoming a volunteer would mean helping with the sessions while being fully supported by our friendly staff and brilliant volunteers.

Walking Groups – If you enjoy getting out and about or want to start getting out more, then the walking groups are a good place to start. Stay fit and healthy and maintain your well-being whilst meeting new people and making new friends with our walking groups. Becoming a volunteer would mean taking on a supportive role in the sessions being fully assisted by our friendly staff and brilliant volunteers.

While this is not an exhaustive list of every single volunteering opportunity we can provide, it’s a small taster of some of the vital services and work we undertake on a daily basis.

One special event taking place that we’re very excited about is our triple celebration of The King’s Coronation, National Gardening Week and The Big Help Out! This extra special celebration will be taking place on Tuesday 2nd May at the Pershore Allotment between 10:30 AM and 12:30 PM. The event will feature tea, coffee and cakes – so please come along and lend a hand if you can, as we celebrate whilst enjoying a spot of gardening!

Additionally, The Big Help Out have also created a handy app, which can be downloaded onto smartphones and used to sign up for specific events - allowing you to keep track of every event that you can lend a hand with!

Conveniently, nearly all of our events will be listed on the app, and you can easily find them by searching for ‘Age UK H&W’ or the name of the specific event you're interested in, for example - ‘Walking Group’.

You can also sign up via The Big Help Out’s official website here: https://bit.ly/41GABOY

Any specific queries regarding our volunteering opportunities and events will be addressed through our referral team, so don’t hesitate to give us a ring on 0800 008 6077 or email referralhub@ageukhw.org.uk

We couldn’t be more excited to participate in The Big Help Out this year, and we are excited to share these rewarding and engaging volunteering opportunities with the local community!
