Our volunteers help adults remain independent in their own homes

The Home from Hospital service provides practical support and companionship for people following a stay in hospital. Offering a hand with shopping, running the vacuum round or simply spending time putting the kettle on and lending a listening ear is vital in a person's recovery, as it alleviates some of their worry about getting the practical things done. Volunteering for this service is flexible, and even being able to offer an hour or two a week, can make a huge difference to the people we support. If you would like to find out more, or volunteer as part of our team please get in touch.

What do our volunteers do?

You would be asked to support clients in their own homes, so we ensure the person needing help lives somewhere close to you and we'll pay your mileage costs to and from the client.

Volunteers typically help with the following things:

  • Food shopping
  • Light housework to include changing beds, hoovering and other light tasks.
  • Encouraging clients to become independent to ensure they can stay living in their own homes
  • Befriending to encourage their confidence
  • To be aware of any other support the clients may need and report back to a team leader so we can arrange this.

Volunteers will not need to provide any personal or medical care.

What will I get out of volunteering?

  • You will meet new people.
  • You will be given full training for the role.
  • You will have opportunities to attend free Age UK H&W training courses
  • You will be part of a close knit team of volunteers and staff.

What is required of me?

  • Our volunteers need to have a patient and understanding attitude
  • We welcome volunteers for as much or as little as you are comfortable with, any time between Monday to Friday 9-5.
  • Don’t worry if you are not well or are on holiday, we can always arrange cover for you.
  • We will arrange for a DBS check prior to you undertaking any visits
