Previous projects and services

Age UK Derby and Derbyshire’s Advocacy Service was a free, independent and confidential service, which offered one-to-one and group support for older people and their carers in Derby City, Amber Valley and Erewash.

The Bolsover Befriending Scheme was a generic befriending scheme for adults of all ages in the Bolsover area. This scheme was funded by Derbyshire County Council and ended in 2016.

In 2012 and 2013 we ran two awareness campaigns to inform older ladies about the symptoms and risks of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The websites below give infomation about both of these types of cancer:

In Derby, the City Council and four voluntary sector organisations, including Age UK Derby and Derbyshire, worked together as ‘Carers Connect Derby’. The main aim of Carers Connect Derby (CCD) was to support Carers to feel recognised and valued and help them to live full and healthy lives.  We actively identified carers and signposted and supported them to receive a range of services and information. This project ended at the end of January 2014. Age UK Derby and Derbyshire worked with health services to enable health professionals like GPs to identify carers and refer them for practical support. Carers Connect Final report

In 2011, we worked with other charities and voluntary groups to prepare people for the digital TV switchover. We helped to mobilise local charities across the Derbyshire area to hold events and presentations, giving advice on how to switch over to digital TV. Thousands of people benefited from the advice and support given at these events.

In 2011 we worked with a professional artist, Jan Flamank on a project exploring older people's sense of self through portraiture. The twelve people chosen from our day centres were all actively involved in the development of their portrait, as real participants rather than passive subjects. The small images in the portraits are informed by extended conversations with them.The project was funded by the Arts Council England, Derbyshire Primary Care Trust, and 28 individual sponsors. Fit as a Fiddle provided health, nutrition, exercise and wellbeing programmes for older people (50+) across the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales. The project ended in 2012 and the final report is available to read.

We offered a selection of day activities, adult learning opportunities, creative arts and social opportunities, a hot meal, personal care and the use of our Bakewell centre facilities. Service users could purchase as much or as little support as needed.

The ‘Stay Warm and Healthy’ project organised community events raising awareness of support services available to help vulnerable residents keep warm during the winter months of 2013.
