What is Council Tax?

Council Tax helps pay for local services like rubbish collection, road maintenance and policing.

It applies to all domestic properties, that is, any property where people are living, but how much you pay depends on two things:

  1. Firstly, Council Tax is charged by the local authority, which gets to decide how much it will be. Council Tax rates in your local authority may be lower or higher than one nearby.
  2. Secondly, each property is assigned a ‘band’ from A to H. How much your Council Tax will be is affected by which band your property is in. A is the lowest band and H is the highest, so the highest charges apply to properties in band H.
