If you are single and have always been interested in taking a cruise but are not sure about doing this on your own, then rest assured that it need not be a lonely experience.

A cruise is a wonderful way to explore the world, with the bonus of visiting and exploring new places as well as the chance to make some new friends.

One of the challenges of travelling by yourself on any holiday is the single supplement which can amount to paying nearly double for the comfort of your own space.

But times are changing. Cruise companies realise that there are a lot of single travellers who want to cruise and there are some great bargains to be had.

Some cruise companies offer single cabins with no supplements (although these do get booked up quickly). These include P&O Cruises, Costa, NCL, Cunard and Swan Hellenic.

Other cruise companies offer you the opportunity to share with another solo traveller of the same sex thus saving you money on your cabin.

Some cruise companies have welcoming parties for single guests, where you can take the opportunity to get to know other like-minded passengers. Another way in which to mingle with fellow guests is through your area of interest and onboard lectures such as wine tasting, cooking classes, and history.

Or if you choose a themed cruise, everyone will have the same interests which makes it easier to form new acquaintances.

If you are worried about dining alone, then you will be reassured to know that seating is usually between 4 - 8 per table, so you can ask to be sat with other solo travellers. Passengers are usually sat together that are similar age groups.

There are also different dining options on different ships, for instance open-dining where you can choose to sit where you would like each evening. This is a good way to get to know more people instead of being sat on the same table each evening.

Our partners, Silver Travel Advisor, will be pleased to make suggestions about cruises which are well-suited to single travellers.
