A Sunny Day for the Falmouth Mayor as he Unveils the Promise of a Fantastic Falmouth Summer Fete

Published on 30 July 2025 10:21 AM

A bright, sunlit day welcomed the excitement of an incredible Summer Fete at our Falmouth Community Hub. Lucy, Age UK Cornwall Hub Manager, along with her ever-present assistant Martin, and a dedicated team of volunteers and stallholders, rose to the occasion with care and enthusiasm.

A Vibrant Array of Stalls

An enticing selection of stalls catered to antique enthusiasts, fashion lovers, jewelry aficionados, and gardening fans alike. This kept not only the stallholders thoroughly engaged but also the visitors happily occupied throughout the morning and well into the afternoon. Even with setup beginning before 8 a.m., time seemed short before Councillor Alan Jewel, the Mayor of Falmouth, ceremoniously cut the fluorescent red ribbon at exactly 10 o'clock, officially kicking off the event and welcoming friends, client’s, and supporters.

Lucy and her Carer of the Year Nomination

In his speech to the gathered audience, he commended the charity's impactful work across Cornwall, highlighting manager Lucy’s nomination for the *Community Carer of the Year Award and reading an excerpt from the citation. Most attendees were unaware of this significant award, let alone Lucy’s role in it, so they erupted in applause and cheers of ‘congratulations!’

‘The Proud to Care Awards are in celebration of those who go above and beyond within Cornwall’s Independent Adult Social Care Sector, and this nomination is a recognition of Community Carers' dedication and positive impact on the lives of those around them.’

The mayor then engaged with several clients and volunteers, particularly expressing his delight at the presence of friends from Falmouth’s Lions and Rugby Club. Following Falmouth Community Hub Fete, he was then on the move again to inaugurate Kimberely Park Lodge, now a vibrant digital community hub, café, and rehearsal space for local bands and theater groups, as well as the new home for Source FM. Soon, Age UK Cornwall will be collaborating with IT specialists there to help our older clients become familiar with the latest technologies.

BBC Radio Cornwall covered the Fair, interviewing Lucy as she dashed from one activity to another. Thanks to all the meticulous planning and effort, the event raised £1565.00, setting a record for this special day!

Before leaving, Alan requested, “May I please cut off a small piece of the ribbon? I always take home a souvenir to remind me of the occasions I open fetes, gardens, charity events, and fundraising activities.”

We like to believe that a little bit of ‘the day’ is cherished in high places.

With thanks
