A Call to Action for Knitters and Crocheters in the Newquay area

Published on 12 October 2026 06:50 AM

Deputy Mayor Sarah Thomson is reaching out to all knitters and crocheters for a community project! We are inviting you to create 10cm squares (or 20cm squares if you’re using chunky yarn) to assemble into 60cm by 80cm lap blankets. This initiative aims to utilise all those leftover bits of wool we accumulate over time.

These blankets will feature a community-made label and will be given to Donna Smokvina - Hub & Wellbeing Manager (Govenek). Age UK Cornwall will distribute the blankets to those in need this Christmas as heartfelt, community-crafted gifts.

Instructions:

  • Use a ruler or tape measure to ensure squares are 10cm or 20cm if chunky.
  • Stitches and needle/hook sizes can vary depending on the wool type.
  • Please remember to sew in the ends.
  • Any type of wool is welcome (woolly wool offers the best warmth), in any color and any stitch, but please create solid blocks instead of holey granny squares. Stripes are encouraged!
Once you’ve finished your squares, you can drop them off at Newquay Library or deliver them to Donna at Govenek on Crantock St, Newquay.
In the attached image, you can see Sarah, who has already completed three blankets and is now working on her fourth. She has friends contributing squares from all over the country, aiming to create ten blankets this Christmas.

This is an ongoing project that not only helps clear out your wool stash but also supports people in the local community to feel connected and warm - what a fantastic bonus!

We also want to thank Deputy Mayor, Sarah Thomson and every crafter that has already got involved in this wonderful project.
