Changes to bus services

Bus companies must take older people’s views and needs into account before they change service routes, according to Age Cymru.

Age Cymru’s Head of Policy and Public Affairs Graeme Francis comments:

“We receive a lot of comments at Age Cymru from older people across Wales about the importance of their local bus services.

“Many have told us that routes are often changed without any consultation taking place on how those changes will affect people who use specific bus services.

“Recently older people in Cardiff have criticised changes to the city’s Baycar route -which are being introduced this weekend, because they were not consulted about those proposals.

“Given that buses are a lifeline for many older people - who are arguably one of the biggest user groups of buses in Wales, it is quite understandable that feelings are running high about the Baycar route.

“Age Cymru feels strongly that people who use bus services should be consulted on any changes to services that affect them – and it makes sound commercial sense for bus operators to do so.

 “Bus companies and organisations must ensure that they are listening to users and considering people with specific needs before they make changes to services and routes.”
