Together this Summer on BBC Radio Norfolk

Published on 12 June 2026 11:13 AM

Age UK Norfolk was delighted to feature our latest campaign, Together this Summer on BBC Radio Norfolk's breakfast show with presenter Chris Goreham on 10th June.

Together this Summer shines a light on the importance of social connection during the summer months, when many older people can experience increased loneliness and isolation. While summer is often seen as a sociable and positive time of year, for some older people it can feel particularly difficult, especially if families are away, regular routines change, or community activities pause during the holiday season.

To help bring the campaign to life, BBC Radio Norfolk spoke to Age UK Norfolk Telephone Befriending Volunteer, Bethany Victory, who was inspired to volunteer and give something back, after losing her father.

"I sadly lost my dad and it  made me re-evaluate everything...it shook everything up and I wanted to do something that was really purposeful. For me, supporting and volunteering with Age UK Norfolk was the perfect way I could fit that in." said Bethany.

Bethany volunteers as a telephone befriender, making weekly, friendly calls to those who often have nobody else to speak to or have very limited connections.

"It gives me so much joy to make that call, because you can really hear it just brightens someone's day!".

Together this Summer encourages people to take action and help to support older people in their community this summer. This could include:

  • Checking in on a friend, family member or neighbour
  • Volunteering for Companionship services
  • Making a donation to support vital services

Together, this Summer, we can make Norfolk a great place to grow older.
