Harvesting the results of hard work and fun at Open Day

Published on 27 August 2025 10:09 AM

Visitors were warmly welcomed to Age UK Wyvern’s allotment group at Pershore recently. An Open Day was held with the aim of attracting new members interested in developing their skills on the organisation’s plot at the town council’s allotment site.

The Open Day coincided with the chance to harvest some of the produce grown at the plot. A bumper crop of tomatoes was shared out, along with plums, beans and potatoes which had been planted at the last open event in April. Visitors were able to find out more about how the group works and enjoy a hot drink and homemade cake.

Members of the group described how they have worked together to grow flowers and vegetables to share and have been supported if they don’t know what to do.

Bridget Quinn, a volunteer who has a background in horticulture, commented, “We faced some challenges growing things this year, especially with the lack of rain, but it’s been rewarding. It does feel good to sit down with a cup of coffee and a slice of cake with the other members of the group and look at what you’ve grown”.

Another attendee, Jill Broadhurst from Worcester, joined the group in the spring after reading about the allotment team online and had this to say about her experience, “I felt like I needed to find ‘my thing’, a hobby I really enjoy, and this is it. I get so much out of going to the allotment, even simple things like noticing all the different ways other people on the allotments have used their plots and seeing the changes each week. I also love taking my goody bag of freshly picked vegetables home with me!”

New volunteers and members are always welcome at the allotment. The group meet between 10.30am and 12.30pm every Tuesday.
