Volunteers Week

Published on 03 June 2025 11:00 AM

Thank you!

This Volunteers' week, we'd like to take the opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to all of our volunteers for their generosity and dedication as a volunteer with Age UK Wyvern.

Thanks to their time, energy and efforts, we have been able to be there for more older people when they need us most. Their contribution to our mission is hugely appreciated!

Pearl's story

Pearl helps out at the Pershore Dementia Café every month, serving refreshments and chatting to attendees. One of the café regulars describes how Pearl, “really works her socks off”.

"I worked as an NHS nurse for many years, and then spent some time with Citizens Advice. I began working at the Pershore Dementia Café when it was run by the Alzheimer’s Society and have stayed there ever since."

"It’s been over ten years now and I find it very rewarding. When I first heard that they needed help I thought, 'I’ll give that a go' and I’m glad I did. It’s really good to have a positive activity to do after you retire”.

Carolyn's story

“Having cared for my husband with vascular dementia for five years, I felt that I had some empathy with both those suffering with dementia and their carers.”

“I have found volunteering at a Age UK Wyvern Dementia Café very fulfilling, largely due to the positive outlook of those who attend. As well as helping to serve coffee and tea with the other volunteers, I have the job of distributing name labels to all those present. This gives me a chance to chat with them all and there is always plenty of laughter, together with good involvement in whatever activity is provided.”

“This is chiefly thanks to Isabel and Sally who run the sessions and who are both efficient and have an excellent rapport with those who come. I feel that everyone enjoys themselves and goes home a little happier.”

Could you help by giving back your free time to change an older person’s life?

Age UK Wyvern relies on the support of its volunteers from across Herefordshire & South Worcestershire. Without the selfless acts of these general public volunteers, we would not be able to operate in the way we do today. Our volunteers not only help provide crucial funding for the charity, but also work directly with a lot of our clients to provide lifelines through our services and social activities.

Volunteering does not have to be a chore. It can be an avenue for people to explore their interests, extend their skillset, give back to their local community and achieve a sense of purpose. It is also a great way for students and other young people to get experience of the workplace and grow their confidence and great for older people who may be retired and are looking to keep active and stay involved in their community.

What are the benefits of volunteering with us?

  • Learn new skills and develop existing ones
  • Develop your confidence and gain experience of the workplace
  • Meet new people and connect with your community
  • Reimbursement of reasonable travel costs incurred
  • Ongoing support and training where relevant
  • Become part of our wider volunteer network to support our cause

Juliette Kay, Volunteer Coordinator at Age UK Wyvern, says,

“Our volunteers are hugely important in the day-to-day operation of the charity. Without them, we simply would not be able to run many of the services and activities that we do today. We have numerous volunteers that selflessly give their time to support our clients and they have all profited from the experience. Volunteering does not have to be a major commitment, even just a couple of hours a week is enough to make a difference.”
