Former NHS nurse James, 75, lives with Parkinson's and needs to look after himself to prevent his symptoms from worsening. But when the cost of living increased, he found it impossible to afford adequate food alongside paying for his essential daily care visits. “I ate less and less and went down to nearly seven stone,” he says.
Thankfully, an Age UK adviser helped James to apply for Attendance Allowance, which means he can now afford to eat well again.
“At the end of working 46 years in the NHS, to feel sad and dispensable is a hard way to go on. But Age UK promised they'd help me, and they kept that promise.”
