Almost a million older people will face a hidden crisis this Christmas: loneliness.
Most people won’t notice. They won’t see the days spent alone, in silence. They won’t realise the risks – like lonely people being 25% more likely to develop dementia. They won't understand that, for so many, the phone never rings – not even on Christmas Day.
When Sandra lost her husband, she struggled with grief and loneliness. But weekly chats with Sarena, her telephone befriender, have brought Sandra comfort.
As Brenda's eyesight has worsened, she has felt more isolated. But regular calls from her telephone befriender Jasmine have helped Brenda feel more connected.
Michael has mobility problems, and would often go days without conversation – until he started getting calls from Gemma, his telephone befriender.
