Bringing People Together at the Chatty Café

Published on 30 September 2025 06:00 PM

At Age UK Hythe, Lyminge and Ashford, we know that sometimes the smallest conversations can make the biggest difference. That’s why we are proud to be part of the Chatty Café Scheme, a national initiative designed to tackle loneliness and encourage connection through the simple act of chatting over a cuppa.

Our Chatty Café venue is welcoming, inclusive, and open to anyone in the community who would like to spend time in a friendly environment. Whether you are new to the area, live alone, or simply enjoy meeting new people, our café is a place where conversations flow naturally, and no one needs to feel isolated.

The idea behind the Chatty Café is beautifully simple: by sitting at a designated “Chatter & Natter” table, people have the chance to connect with others who are also open to a friendly chat. There’s no pressure, no expectations – just an opportunity to talk, listen, and share stories. For many, these conversations brighten the day, create lasting friendships, and strengthen community bonds.

Our volunteers and staff ensure that the café is a safe, supportive, and welcoming space. We offer a warm drink, a smile, and the reassurance that you are among friends. While it may seem like a small gesture, regular social interaction can have a huge impact on wellbeing, reducing feelings of loneliness and helping people feel more connected to their community.

We’ve already seen wonderful results: strangers becoming friends, neighbours reconnecting, and new residents discovering a sense of belonging. It proves that a cup of tea and a chat can be powerful tools for combatting loneliness.

If you haven’t visited us yet, we’d love to welcome you. Whether you stay for five minutes or an hour, the important thing is taking that first step to join us at the Chatty Café. Everyone is welcome, and every conversation is valued.
