Community Generosity at Dunelm Ashford Brings Comfort and Joy to Older People Supported by Age UK

Age UK Hythe, Lyminge and Ashford is proud to share the positive impact of a recent community initiative that has brought warmth, comfort and reassurance to older people across the local area. Thanks to the generosity of residents and the ongoing partnership between Age UK and Dunelm, every client supported by the charity has been able to receive a thoughtful gift.

The initiative took place at Dunelm in Ashford, where members of the public were invited to donate items that could be turned into gift packages for older people. The response from the local community was overwhelming, with donations including cosy socks, blankets, biscuits, chocolates and other comfort items. These contributions were carefully brought together to create personalised gift bundles that could be shared with clients receiving support from Age UK Hythe, Lyminge and Ashford.

For many of the older people supported by the charity, the gifts represented far more than the practical items inside. They offered a reminder that someone was thinking of them and that they are not alone. For those living with limited mobility, reduced social contact or financial pressures, receiving a gift can be a powerful symbol of care and connection. Small gestures such as these can play an important role in lifting spirits and improving wellbeing.

Age UK Hythe, Lyminge and Ashford works closely with older people across the district, offering a range of services designed to help them remain independent, connected and supported. The organisation sees first-hand how loneliness and isolation can affect older people, particularly during colder months or periods of increased living costs. Initiatives like this one help to ease some of those pressures, even if only in a small way, while reinforcing the sense of community that exists locally.

The success of the initiative was made possible through the strong partnership between Age UK and Dunelm, as well as the enthusiasm and kindness of local shoppers. Dunelm Ashford provided a welcoming space for donations and actively supported the campaign, helping to raise awareness and encourage participation. Their commitment to supporting local charities has once again demonstrated the value of businesses working alongside community organisations to create meaningful change.

Volunteers and staff at Age UK Hythe, Lyminge and Ashford carefully distributed the gift packages to clients across the community. Each delivery was met with gratitude and appreciation, and many recipients expressed how touched they were by the thought behind the gifts. For some, it was a highlight during a challenging period, while for others it reinforced the knowledge that support is always available.

Reflecting on the initiative, an Age UK Hythe, Lyminge and Ashford representative said:

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated at Dunelm Ashford. The generosity shown by the local community has allowed us to bring comfort and joy to every client we support, and it has truly made a difference. These gifts may seem small, but to the people receiving them, they mean a great deal.”

Age UK Hythe, Lyminge and Ashford would like to extend sincere thanks to everyone who contributed, as well as to the team at Dunelm Ashford for their continued support. Together, this partnership has highlighted the positive impact that compassion, collaboration and community spirit can have on the lives of older people locally.
