Why We’re Sweet on National Donut Day – And You Should Be Too!

Published on 02 May 2025 10:10 AM

At Age UK Hythe, Lyminge and Ashford, we love any excuse to come together, share a smile, and enjoy a well-earned treat. That’s why we’re delighted to be celebrating National Donut Day this year — and you’re invited!

Mark your calendar and join us on Tuesday 13th May 2025 at the heart of our community: Oaklands Café. All day long, we’ll be giving away a FREE donut with every drink purchase — while stocks last. It’s our way of saying thank you, connecting with familiar faces, and hopefully meeting a few new ones too.

A Sweet Way to Connect

There’s something beautifully simple about a donut. Whether you’re a jam-filled fan, a classic glazed lover, or a chocolate-icing enthusiast, it’s the kind of treat that brings instant joy. Paired with a warm cuppa and shared in good company, it becomes more than just a snack — it becomes a moment.

At Oaklands Café, we’ve seen how food and friendship go hand in hand. A simple coffee and chat can be a lifeline for someone who’s been feeling a little isolated. That’s why we’re not just celebrating donuts — we’re celebrating togetherness.

So bring a friend, a neighbour, or just your good self. Our friendly team will be on hand with smiles, service, and of course… plenty of donuts!

Did You Know? A Bite-Sized History of Donuts

Donuts might seem like a modern-day indulgence, but they actually have a rich and fascinating history:

  • 🍩 Dutch settlers were the first to introduce fried dough balls to North America, calling them olykoeks (or “oily cakes”).
  • 🍩 The round shape with a hole in the middle? That came later, thanks to a clever American sailor who wanted the centre to cook evenly.
  • 🍩 National Donut Day began in 1938, launched by the Salvation Army to honour the “Donut Lassies” who served these sweet treats to soldiers during World War I.

So when you enjoy your donut with us, you’re taking part in a tradition that spans centuries, continents — and some pretty amazing women!

Why This Day Matters to Us

Here at Age UK Hythe, Lyminge and Ashford, we believe that little things can make a big difference. A hot drink, a fresh pastry, a friendly “how are you?” — they all add up to a feeling of being seen, valued and included.

We see it every week at Oaklands Café. People drop by for a coffee, and before long they’re deep in conversation with someone new, laughing with our volunteers, or getting helpful advice from our team. It’s community in action.

National Donut Day is fun, but for us, it’s also a perfect reflection of what we stand for: warmth, nourishment, and human connection.

What You Can Expect on the Day

We’ll be welcoming visitors from 10am onwards on Tuesday 13th May at Oaklands Café, based right here at our Hythe centre.

Here’s what you’ll find:

  • A variety of drinks: from frothy cappuccinos to classic British tea
  • A selection of free donuts (one with every drink purchase, while they last!)
  • Friendly staff and volunteers ready to chat, listen and share in the fun
  • A relaxed space to meet old friends or make new ones

Whether you pop in for a quick coffee break or stay for a longer natter, we’d love to see you.

Want to Make It Extra Special?

Why not bring someone along who might need a lift? Maybe a neighbour who lives alone, or a relative you haven’t caught up with in a while. Days like these are made for shared moments — and nothing says “I’m thinking of you” like a donut and a hot brew.

And if you’re already a regular at Oaklands, why not help us spread the word? Let your walking group, social club, or online friends know that #DonutDay is happening in Hythe.

Let’s Celebrate – One Donut at a Time

We’re proud to be part of a community that looks out for each other, shows up, and finds joy in everyday things. That’s the spirit we’re celebrating this National Donut Day.

So come on down, treat yourself, and let’s make this sweet day a memorable one.

We’ll put the kettle on. You bring your appetite and your smile.
