The Big Knit is Back for 2020-2021

Published on 20 November 2020 11:21 AM

Each winter, one older person dies needlessly every minute because of the cold. With over a decade of support from knitters up and down the country, the Big Knit has raised vital funds to support local and national winter projects to help older people keep warm and well in winter through befriending visits, emergency cold weather support, warm meals and other vital services.

Age UK, who have partnered with Innocent, want to see a world where no one has no one to turn to. In total, an incredible 1,500,034 tiny hats were knitted around the UK last year. Each one of these will keep a smoothie's head warm, and for every one sold, innocent will donate 25p to Age UK to help our older communities warm and supported this winter.

Age UK Medway raised over £300 last year after nearly 2,000 wonderful tiny hats were knitted by our local Medway communities! This year, we think we can go even bigger, as many of us are spending much of our time at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. If you, or anyone you know, are struggling for activities to keep you busy or you are suffering with anxiety as a result of what's going on in the world, starting a new activity and getting creative can be really beneficial to your mental health.

"The Big Knit campaign couldn't happen without the support of thousands of amazing people across the UK who take part and knit woolly hats to adorn innocent smoothies each year."

Douglas Lamont, CEO at Innocent

If you'd like to get knitting early, that's great! Download our knitting patterns and get started. Just hold onto your hats (pun not intended) for the time being, whilst we are still adhering to lockdown restrictions.

Happy knitting!
