Trafford stands strong for Falls Prevention Week

Standing strong together for Falls Prevention Week – that’s the message from Trafford Council and its partners as the borough gets behind this national campaign.

Falls Prevention Week is all about raising awareness of the risk of falls — especially for older people — and sharing simple, practical ways to help stop them from happening.

Figures from the Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership show that around 10,000 people aged 65 and over are injured by falls each year across the region.

Trafford Council is working with local partners, including Age UK Salford and Trafford, to highlight what residents can do to stay active, independent, and steady on their feet.

One of the key local initiatives is the Balance Programme from Age UK, which offers friendly, expert-led classes to help improve posture, balance, strength and confidence. The programme includes support for people at risk of falling, and is completely free to attend.

Cllr Jane Slater, Trafford Councils Executive Member for Healthy and Independent Lives, said:

“Falls can happen to anyone, but the risk increases as we get older. That doesn’t mean they’re an unavoidable part of ageing. With the right support, advice and activity, many falls can be prevented. Age UK’s Balance Programme is a great example of how we’re helping people across Trafford stay strong, safe and independent.”

Here are five useful NHS tips that can help anyone to stay on their feet:

  • Keep moving – regular activity helps build strength and balance.
  • Tidy up trip hazards – loose rugs, trailing cables or clutter.
  • Check eyes and ears – even small changes can affect balance.
  • Wear proper shoes – avoid worn-out slippers or backless footwear.
  • Ask for help – talk to your GP or local support services if you’re concerned.

If you’re a friend, family member or carer for someone who may be at risk of a fall, here’s how you can help them to stay steady:

  • Spot the signs – be aware of any changes in everyday behaviour or environment that could suggest someone is at greater risk.
  • Make the home safer – clear trip hazards, introduce more light, suggest handrails or walking aids.
  • Talk about it – ask if they have concerns. Suggest initiatives like the Balance Programme.

In addition to the Balance Programme, older residents in Trafford can also access a wide range of local support. Trafford Leisure runs classes such as “Staying Steady” and gentle exercise sessions designed to build confidence and balance. Find out more here: https://traffordleisure.co.uk/

Trafford Local Care Organisation provides specialist falls clinics and physiotherapy for people at risk, while occupational therapists can advise on home adaptations and equipment like grab rails or walking aids. Find out more here:https://traffordlco.org/
