Let's Talk Money Campaign

16 June 2016

Lady helping older person with forms

Each year up to £5.5bn of Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit goes unclaimed by older people. This is despite 1.6m people in later life living in poverty. Age UK's research suggests that as many as 72% of older people who have claimed benefits say it’s improved their lives.

That’s why our Let’s Talk Money campaign is highlighting the difference this extra money can make and asking local and national Government to do more to help older people claim the benefits they’re entitled to.

Last year Age UK helped put £160m back into the pockets of older people.

Are you missing out?

Imagine what a bit more money could mean for you. It could help with shopping, paying the bills or being able to get out and about.

Our Claiming Benefits section offers information and advice on common benefits for older people. You’d be surprised by what you can claim.

Start by finding out if you can claim these common benefits:

  • Pension Credit - over 4m people can claim this, yet about 1 in 3 miss out. It can be worth hundreds or even thousands of pounds a year
  • Attendance Allowance – this is worth up to £79.15 a week for people aged 65 or over who need help with personal care because of an illness or disability.

Our guide More money in your pocket (PDF 878 KB) has more information on what benefits are available for people over pension age and how you can claim them.
