keeping Penistone warmWhat do Social Inclusion Projects do?

Community Involvement:

Local people will be involved by contributing their local knowledge and ideas and acting as ‘eyes on the ground’ to keep a lookout for older people who might be isolated or lonely.

Group Activities:

The project will support existing groups and set up new groups with local people where you can go and meet like minded people, make new friends and try new experiences.

Good Neighbour Scheme:

The Good Neighbour Scheme will provide practical and social support for older people who need a bit of extra help and find getting out difficult.

Examples:

  • Visiting someone regularly for a chat and a cuppa.
  • Collecting shopping or a prescription when someone can’t get to the shops.
  • Popping in to see someone if they’re not well.
  • Doing a simple task in the house such as clearing snow or fallen leaves to keep someone safe.
  • Accompanying someone who doesn't feel confident when going out to help build their confidence.

North East Area

The Social Inclusion & Dementia Project funded by the North East Area Council and delivered by Age UK Barnsley covers the Cudworth, Monk Bretton, North East and Royston wards. This Project aims to positively address the Social Isolation of older people living in the North East Area. It also has the goal of making the North East Area the first Dementia Friendly Area in Barnsley.

We are working together with local people in the North East area to find out what activities and groups are currently available for older people in the area.

We will be listening to what local people have to say and from this we will be able to identify what new activities and groups local people would like to have access to.

Age UK Barnsley will also be looking to recruit a team of volunteers who would like to be a ‘Good Neighbour’.  The Good Neighbour Scheme will provide practical and 1:1 support for older people living in the North East area who may need a little bit of extra help.

Penistone Area

The Penistone Social Inclusion project, funded by Penistone Area Council and delivered by Age UK Barnsley, can link you to groups and new friends in your community.

There are over 4,000 people aged 65+ living in the Penistone area. For some people later life brings challenges that can lead to social isolation or loneliness.

This project supports people aged over 50 who live in one of the following areas; Penistone, Millhouse Green, Thurlstone, Crow Edge, Flouch, Oxspring, Hoylandswaine, Silkstone, Silkstone Common, Thurgoland, High Hoyland, Cawthorne, Hood Green, Crane Moor Wortley and Tankersley

Due to the rural nature of the Penistone area it can be quite difficult to get out and about, particularly using public transport so we also facilitate a

Community Car Scheme

We can help you to use community transport services provided by Barnsley Dial-a-Ride or we can introduce you to the Community Car Scheme which operates in the Penistone area where a volunteer driver will provide transport in their own car – you only need to pay them an amount to cover their car fuel costs. This is all worked out in advance of the journey so that you don’t need to worry about how much it’s going to cost you. You can travel to places such as the hairdresser, the shops, the doctor or hospital or simply be taken out to visit a friend. Our drivers are all trained volunteers and have patience and understanding of individual needs.
