Age UK Barnsley are proudly commissioned by Barnsley Council to provide projects designed to build stronger communities and tackle social isolation in five areas of Barnsley (Central, North, and South).
What are our Community Outreach and Engagement Projects?
Our Community Outreach and Engagement Projects are here to help people aged 50+ stay connected, active and supported in the Barnsley community.
Whether you're looking to meet new people, enjoy a hobby, improve your wellbeing or simply get out of the house, our friendly team offers a wide range of opportunities to help you make the most of later life.
Supporting Friendships, Wellbeing and Community Connections
We run welcoming groups across the Barnsley borough, offering something for everyone. Our groups are open to men, women and mixed groups, with activities including:
- Bingo
- Board games and quizzes
- Arts and crafts
- Carpet bowls
- Chair-based exercise
- Dance fitness
- Lunch clubs
- Social afternoons
And much more!
Our aim is to reduce loneliness, build confidence and create lasting friendships in a relaxed and supportive environment.
One-to-one support
Not everyone feels ready to join a group, and that's absolutely okay. We offer friendly one-to-one support, whether you would simply like someone to check in with or need a little extra encouragement to get involved in your community.
Our Befriending Service matches people with a volunteer for regular telephone calls or face-to-face visits, helping to build friendships, reduce loneliness and provide ongoing support.
Trips and special events
Throughout the year, we organise trips, celebrations and community events, giving people the chance to explore new places, enjoy new experiences and make wonderful memories together.

Everything we do is focused on helping people aged 50+ enjoy later life by building friendships, strengthening community connections and supporting health and wellbeing.
