An integral part of our mission at Age UK South Cumbria is to help alleviate loneliness and isolation among the local older population and to promote a greater sense of wellbeing. We offer an exciting range of ongoing social events and activities for people aged 50 and over throughout South Cumbria.
These include regular lunch clubs, exercise classes, low-impact walking sports, and even a choir. All activities are designed to be inclusive and accessible, with fitness and sports sessions tailored to suit all abilities.
The Covid-19 pandemic has made it harder for older people to look after their physical health. Not only have they had fewer opportunities to be physically active, but a significant number have also experienced delays in accessing healthcare and treatment. As a result, older people have told us they feel they have 'aged', lost independence, and have a reduced ability to do the things they used to enjoy.
These changes have had a profound impact on people's mental health, with many experiencing increased feelings of loneliness.
Age UK research reveals that around 7% of people aged 65 and over (approximately 940,000) are often lonely. Furthermore, 3% of older adults (around 270,000 in England) go a week feeling isolated without speaking to a friend or family member.
Age UK South Cumbria has re-established and expanded its social inclusion programmes that were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. Whether you, or someone you know, would like to improve your health or simply connect with like-minded people, we have something for everyone, wherever you are in South Cumbria.
