Discounts and Grants for Cost of Living Crisis 2023

Struggling to make ends meet this Autumn/Winter?

As the energy price cap has increased since last October, numerous households in West Cumbria now find themselves challenged to meet their own and/or their family's needs.

If you're feeling concerned about the imminent colder months, please be assured that there are plenty of resources and information at your disposal. Age UK West Cumbria offer a FREE Information & Advice service, our trained professionals are available to give you guidance and support to access grants and benefits.

Additionally, many local supermarkets are currently offering discounts and promotions. We encourage you to reach out to your nearby stores to explore the assistance they can provide during this period.

  • Lidl are offering "Too Good To Waste" veg boxes for just £1.50 per 5kg box. These boxes also come with recipes for inspiration so you can make the most of each item you are given!

  • Morrisons in-store cafes are offering a free meal for one child, under 16 years of age, when an accompanying adult is buying a meal with a value of £4.99 or over. They are also supplying vegetable boxes, options from £3 (available in store from 28th September and online from 2nd October).

  • Sainsbury’s are offering FREE budget-friendly meal ideas that can feed families of 4 for under £5 (or if you live alone you can keep extra portions in your freezer for later dates!).

  • Iceland are offering many offers, including weekly discounts, frozen prices (£1 freezes across hundreds of lines) and deals on certain products – available in store – and a weekly 10% discount on Tuesdays for people aged 60 and over.

Funds and payments available

Winter Fuel Payment (GOV) - This scheme offers pensioners born on or before 25th September 1956 up to £200 per household every year towards your energy bills. This payment usually goes straight into your bank account and you do not need to apply for this. This year, due to the cost of living, each qualifying household will receive a further £300 payment on top of their usual payment.
